Caroline Bird & Eavan Boland shortlisted for Costa Book Awards

We're thrilled to announce that Caroline Bird's The Air Year and Eavan Boland's The Historians have been shortlisted for the 2020 Costa Book Awards in the Poetry category! The news was announced at 7:30PM on BBC Radio 4's Front Row on Tuesday 24th November.

The Air Year, Caroline's sixth poetry collection, also won this year's Forward Prize for Best Collection and was a Telegraph Book of the Month (February). It follows her previous collection, the 2017 T.S. Eliot Prize-shortlisted and best-selling In These Days of Prohibition.
The judges (Zaffar Kunial, Tristram Fane Saunders and Leah Wilkins) said that it’s “Inventive and big-hearted, surreal and personal - this collection is full of love, clever connections and brilliant individual poems.”

The Historians is sadly Eavan Boland's final volume, following her passing earlier this year. It is a Times Literary Supplement Book of the Year for 2020. The judges said that “These poems record, in breath-taking detail, the lives of ordinary women: mothers, daughters, grandmothers.”

The pair are joined on the shortlist by Rachel Long and Martha Sprackland.

The category winners will be announced on 4th January 2021 with the Costa Book of the Year announced on 26th January 2021.

Congratulations to Caroline, and to Eavan's family and friends!
