Carcanet Press is our most courageous publisher. When you look at what they have brought out since their beginnings, it makes so many other houses seem timid or merely predictable.

Albyn: Shorter Books and MonographsHugh MacDiarmidEdited by Alan Riach![]() 10% off
Categories: 20th Century, Scottish
Imprint: Lives and Letters Publisher: Carcanet Press Available as: Hardback (320 pages) (Pub. Jan 1997) 9781857542332 £25.00 £22.50
Substantial pieces on Scottish themes are assembled in this volume, from Albyn (1927) to A Political Speech delivered at Glasgow University in 1972. The editor has focused on MacDiarmid's view of powerful figures in Scottish culture, notably David Hume and - of particular interest in this Burns bicentenary year - Robert Burns. MacDiarmid's consideration of Burns in the year celebrating the bicentenary of his birth (1952) has lost none of its iconoclastic force.
Praise for Hugh MacDiarmid
'Watch him, an angel's set his tongue on fire.'
Norman MacCaig 'Lord God, this fellow is a poet, singing a song even when pain seizes him, or the woe of the world murmurs in his heart' Sean O'Casey 'Every door in any town should be wide open to that great lyric poet Hugh MacDiarmid.' Dylan Thomas 'These great people like MacDiarmid are a bit scary, ' Liz Lochhead 'Riach has done Scottish literature a great service in masterminding the Carcanet edition of the works of Hugh MacDiarmid...'
