  • PEDRO TAMEN was born in Lisbon in 1934. He studied Law at the the University of Lisbon and has worked as a teacher, publisher, editor and journalist. He was President of the Portuguese P.E.N. Club (1987-1990) and from 1975 until 2000 he was a trustee of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation in Lisbon. He is the author of twenty books of poetry, and his poems have been translated into more than ten languages. He has himself translated many works of foreign literature past and present, from The Epic of Gilgamesh and The Imitation of Christ to Flaubert and Marquez. He is currently translating Proust's Remembrance of Things Past. He was twice a finalist for the European Translation Prize.
