Francis R. Jones

  • About
  • Francis R. Jones (b. 1955) studied Serbo-Croat and German at Cambridge and modern Serbo-Croat poetry at the University of Sarajevo. He has translated several volumes each of poetry by Serbian poet Ivan V. Lalić and Dutch poet Hans Faverey, as well as volumes by the poets Mak Dizdar and Skender Kulenović (from Bosnian-Croatian-Serbian), Esther Jansma (Dutch), Miklós Radnóti (Hungarian) and Vyacheslav Kupriyanov (Russian). He also continued the late Anne Pennington’s work on editing and translating Vasko Popa’s Complete Poems. His poetry translations have won 14 prizes in the UK, USA, Netherlands and Bosnia, including the Poetry Society’s European Poetry Translation Prize twice for collections by Ivan V. Lalić. Francis R. Jones is also Reader in Translation Studies at Newcastle University. Here he teaches on translator and interpreter training MAs. He researches all aspects of poetry translation, ranging from translators’ strategies to how poetry translation can promote political views.
