Jorge de Sena (1919-1978) was born in Lisbon. He studied Civil Engineering in Oporto but turned to writing poetry, fiction, criticism and essays. Uncomfortable with the Salazar regime, he emigrated to Brazil in 1959 and in 1965 moved to the United States. He held various chairs, notably that of Portuguese Literature at the University of California.
