Quote of the Day
Carcanet has always been the place to look for considerations of purely literary and intellectual merit. Its list relies on the vision and the faith and the energy of people who care about books, and values. It is thus as rare as it is invaluable.

Monday, 12 Mar 2018

In These Days of Prohibition Cover We're delighted to announce that Caroline Bird's In These Days of Prohibition has been shortlisted for the Ted Hughes Award 2017!

The Ted Hughes Award for New Work in Poetry, presented annually by The Poetry Society since 2009, celebrates the outstanding contributions made by poets to our cultural life, acknowledging the possibilities of poetry both on the page and beyond. The £5,000 prize is donated by Carol Ann Duffy, funded from the annual honorarium the Poet Laureate traditionally receives from HM The Queen.

This year’s Ted Hughes Award shortlist offers seven distinctive voices, presenting poetry on page, stage and airwave and mixing verse with video, audio, diary and doodle. The works respond to a broad spectrum of topics and inspirations, including dementia, modern surrealism, masculine identity, Welsh epic, Black British history, the National Poetry Library, and bombed cities in Japan. The Ted Hughes Award, in its ninth year, continues to present exacting and exciting material that showcases the vibrancy, brilliancy and diversity of modern poetry.

The final winner will be revealed at an awards ceremony presented by Carol Ann Duffy at the Savile Club, Mayfair, London on Wednesday 28th March 2018. The winners of The Poetry Society's National Poetry Competition will also be announced at the ceremony.
