Charles Tomlinson is a much-travelled and widely translated poet. A citizen of the world, he writes about foreign places and people besides the English country landscape where he lives, in a style that is both muscular and intensely visual. His numerous translations from Spanish and Italian are a measure of his internationalism. Many of his poems arise from walks and 'conversations' with his fellow writers and friends.
This is a substantial selection, made by the poet himself, from all fourteen of his books since 1955, up until Jubilation (Oxford Poets 1955), and including two poems written in his seventieth year, the year of publication.
