J.L. Gili (1907 - 1998)

  • J.L. (Joan) Gili (1907–1998) was born in Barcelona and lived in England from 1934. A scholar, translator, publisher and bookseller, Joan Gili ran the Dolphin Book Company in Oxford for many years. His first Lorca translations, made in collaboration with Stephen Spender, appeared in 1939. As well as his Lorca Selected Poems, he also translated the Catalan poet Josep Carner’s Nabí (2001). He died in Oxford in 1998.
