Quote of the Day
Carcanet has always been the place to look for considerations of purely literary and intellectual merit. Its list relies on the vision and the faith and the energy of people who care about books, and values. It is thus as rare as it is invaluable.

Caroline Bird: StAnza

Saturday 9 Mar 2019, 11:30 to 12:30

The Town Hall, Queens Gardens

In this talk, Jacqueline Saphra will be discussing Edna St Vincent Millay; and Caroline Bird will be talking on James Tate.

Our Past & Present sessions offer contemporary speakers and poets a chance to share their enthusiasm for favourite past poets. This Saturday afternoon, two writers discuss two Pulitzer-winning poets prominent in the sphere of American poetry, both of whom write across genres. Jacqueline Saphra will be discussing Edna St Vincent Millay, an exceptional poet who used her rich and emotionally vulnerable work to shine light on the controversial issues of social equality and welfare. Also speaking will be Caroline Bird, who will be sharing her interest in James Tate, a prolific writer known as much for his prose as his poetry - his graceful and yet surreal tone and style captured audiences as his works danced around subjects of place and identity.

Tickets for this event are £4.50/£3.50 and will go on sale in January. For more information, please see the festival website.
