T.S. Eliot founded the Poetry Book Society in 1953 in order to promote a love and understanding of contemporary poetry. The PBS is now a unique membership organisation which exists to keep people all over the world up to date with the best new English language poetry being published in the UK and Ireland today. The PBS is also a specialist book club and a not-for-profit registered charity funded by the Arts Council England.

The Poetry Library is currently closed to visitors as part of the transformation of the Royal Festival Hall. The Poetry Library will return to its home on Level 5 of the Royal Festival Hall in January 2007. However, some services will continue as normal through this period: the postal and email enquiry service, the continued updating of the online catalogue of holdings for all collections, the acquisitions department, the press cuttings collection, the images of poets collection and the children's collection in a temporary residence at the Centre for Literacy in Primary Education.
