Carcanet Press is our most courageous publisher. When you look at what they have brought out since their beginnings, it makes so many other houses seem timid or merely predictable.

Review of 'Distance and Memory', the Guardian Best Holiday Reads 2013

Peter Davidson, an art historian, has written a remarkable and unusual book, Distance and Memory, which is a collection of essays about place and the effect of place. I have started this book but want to make it last the summer. It is a sustained prose poem, very moving in its effect.

- Alexander McCall Smith
