Carcanet Press Poetry Publisher
Quote of the Day
British publishing always needs the supplement of such enterprises as Carcanet -- beautifully independent, skilfully managed, and by people with exceptional literary taste. It gives one heart that there are such people and such a press, and that they are too resourceful to succumb to the climate.

The Photographed Hands#Moniza Alvi
after Jules Supervielle

They were made to feel at ease in a world of smooth surfaces
where the craggiest mountains are gentle to touch
and can be held in the hollow of a hand.
They were being treated like a face
for the first time in their lives - under the floodlights
they sensed they had a kind of forehead,
and the signs of features being born.
Memory was moving towards this new territory
like a great wave calmly gathering itself.
The consciousness of the brain
reached down to the thumb -
the thumb surrendered lightly.
And while the exposure lasted, the hands
gave a name to the sun, to the beauty of the day.
They found a word for their slight hesitation,
called it 'trembling'
and knew that it came from the human heart
where their warm veins led.
They understood that life passes and is a fragile thing.
Then the floodlights were withdrawn, leaving the hands
with no inkling of what they'd gleaned
during that short time with the forces of light.
Though no one by then could even call them forgetful.
