Quote of the Day
British publishing always needs the supplement of such enterprises as Carcanet -- beautifully independent, skilfully managed, and by people with exceptional literary taste. It gives one heart that there are such people and such a press, and that they are too resourceful to succumb to the climate.

  • Extended Family is a sensual celebration of the varied relationships that make up lives richly lived: from the subtle, intimate interactions of close family members and lovers, to the mutual rewards and stresses of relationships with friends, therapists, students and housemates.

The book begins in America, with childhood memories and adolescent love. In the second section, 'Younger Men Have Birthdays Too', a love affair unravels in a sequence of tender, angry love poems. In the final section, relationships encompass casual interactions and the close understandings of friends, loving kindness and the chaos of mental breakdown. Praise for Linda Chase 'The Wedding Spy is a lucid, intelligent collection that doodles with traditional form and which scopes the poet's own life.' - Vic Allen, North magazine.

'Linda Chase has a mature voice, encompassing the weight of experience as well as intensity of feeling...She has a laid-back, conversational style, which can contain a complex and much darker reality...I like Chase's poems for their honesty, their warmth and their wry sense of humour.' - Ambit magazine, 2002.

'Her poems are powerful and mature, sensual and acerbic...Alongside this unobtrusive, technical skill Linda Chase's poetry also has three other important qualities: a directness that neither evades nor titillates; a curiosity that investigates and interrogates the what-ifs of the human psyche and a wit that made me laugh out loud.' - James Sale, Tears in the Fence.

'Poems that are punchy, direct, moving, but unsentimental...These are poems to admire and return to. A talent to watch.' - R.V. Bailey.
