Quote of the Day
Carcanet has always been the place to look for considerations of purely literary and intellectual merit. Its list relies on the vision and the faith and the energy of people who care about books, and values. It is thus as rare as it is invaluable.

imagine plying the loose strokes of a reed pen, ink and wash, tone and tints to the grain and texture of the patter around you, as the draughtsman’s tools model the figure from the blank page from ‘Coming Forth By Day’ Gabriel Levin’s new collection breaks new ground in its formal experimentation as well as in its exploration of remote corners of the Mediterranean. The long title poem is written from the multiple perspectives of the personages in Courbet’s large painting The Artist’s Studio. Courbet’s realism blends with ancient eastern mythologies, including the Egyptian Book of the Dead, which gives the collection its title. In another long poem, ‘Balthazar’s Field’, the poet walks the length and breadth of Patmos, seeking out the hidden and the heterogeneous: the cave of St John, a Greek priestess’s inscription carved on a stone, ‘the rock rose / nestled in its alms of soil’. The book concludes with an extended meditation on modern music (‘cored marvels of pitch’) written in homage to the composer Alexander Goehr.

Praise for Gabriel Levin
'This is an exquisite book. It is not often that one journeys through poetic lands with such breathless anticipation as I have done through The Maltese Dreambook...like all good poetry, his verses are multi-layered and demanding...Coleridge believed that language is the vehicle through which divinity passes into humanity and that poets are the true guardians of it. In Levin one could not wish for a more passionate and imaginative guardian.'
Sonja Besford, Ambit 'The poems are richly layered, musical explorations of the act of translation, from experience into art, and from the ancient world into the present...Given the realized ambition, technical achievement and stunning visual quality of this collection, Levin, for the foreseeable future at least, seems similarly set to stay.' Sinead Morrisey, PN Review March-April, 2000 'Meanwhile, in Jerusalem, the poet Gabriel Levin has written another erudite, modernist and intellectually stimulating volume, Errant.' Peter Lawson, The Jewish Chronicle |
