Carcanet Press
Quote of the Day
British publishing always needs the supplement of such enterprises as Carcanet -- beautifully independent, skilfully managed, and by people with exceptional literary taste. It gives one heart that there are such people and such a press, and that they are too resourceful to succumb to the climate.

  • About
  • Ancient Greek poet Theocritus ' history is uncertain and biographical information must be pieced together through his poetry. It is most possible he was born in Syracuse, as he claims in his verse to be a countryman of Homer's Sicilian Cyclops. Speculation places him variously around the Mediterranean throughout his lifetime, some favouring the island of Kos, some around Egypt, especially Alexandria. It is almost certain that he lived and worked during the 3 rd century BC.

Theocritus is widely credited with the invention of bucolic, or pastoral poetry, taking as his subject matter the affairs of shepherds and scenic descriptions of country life. This style was not only influential on the classical poets, most notably Virgil, but it also found favour in English among such varied poets as Pope, Marlowe and Tennyson.
