  • Ralph Russell, a leading scholar-interpreter of Urdu, was born in 1918. He is Emeritus Reader in Urdu at the University of London. He has written widely on Urdu literature and culture. His book The Pursuit of Urdu Literature: a select history (Zed Press, 1992) is a useful critical companion to his Carcanet volumes.
