Idris Parry, formerly Professor of Modern German Literature at the University of Manchester, is a regular contributor to journals including The Times Literary Supplement and of talks to the BBC. Among many awards he has received the German State Order of Merit. He had published two previous collections of essays, Animals of Silence (Oxford University Press) and Hand to Mouth (Carcanet).
